How to Use a Chore Wheel to Share Housework Fairly
A chore wheel works because nobody chooses who gets the worst job: the wheel does. That simple change removes most arguments about fairness. Here is a system that works for families and shared houses, using two wheels: one for people and one for chores.
Key facts
- List every chore first, so nothing is forgotten.
- Put hard chores on the wheel once and easy ones twice, or pair them.
- Spin once a week, with elimination mode on, so nobody gets two jobs before others get one.
- Rotate: last week’s winner of the worst job sits out from it next week.

Step 1: List every chore
Walk through the home and write down every recurring job: dishes, trash, laundry, vacuuming, bathroom, plants, pets. Our chores wheel has 16 common ones to start from.
Step 2: Make it fair, not just random
Random is fair over time, but in any single week someone might get two big jobs. To even things out:
- Pair jobs: combine a hard chore with an easy one on the same line, like “Bathroom + water plants”.
- Weight easy chores: add an easy job twice so it comes up more often.
- Match ages: keep a separate wheel for young children with age-appropriate jobs.
Step 3: Spin once a week
1. Put each person’s name on the random name picker and turn on elimination mode.
2. For each chore, spin a name. When the names run out, Reset and keep going.
3. Copy the results list and stick it on the fridge or in the family chat.
Step 4: Review after a month
Ask everyone whether it felt fair. Adjust pairings, add missing chores and save the new wheel with the Save button.
